There are books that are highly rated where I wonder how that many people could like them, but not these. Alice Winters does neither of those things, yet she draws you in for a thumpin’ good story. Still others develop a character fully, only to kill them off for shock value.

(I am made sad because the book is finished, not because the ending is sad.) There are authors who simply tell you what a person is like, because you cannot tell anything about who they are from their words or actions. I will happily skip a few brief scenes that make me uncomfortable to get the luscious diversion that allows me to keep going on tedious tasks while the time just flies by, even if it means I am greatly saddened when it is over. Oh, yes, sex, too, although I am so old that I am too embarrassed to do anything but keep repeating, “Alexa, skip two minutes,” until it is past.
